iPad reality check – one week later review

I have been using my iPad for about a week now – its time to see if my initial 24 hours review was right. The short answer is: yes i was right :) However you can still read the longer answer below.

Is it really only a week? The iPad has taken such a natural place in my daily life, that I can’t really believe I have been using it only for a few days. Dont know yet if you really need such a device? You dont but it makes your life better! Here is how:

  • when i come home, the notebook stays out. All your facebook, private mail and surfing goes very well with the iPad .. the big advantage is that you can now do these things in a “lean back” situation .. comfortably on the couch, on the balcony in the sun or sitting on the toilet  :)
  • I now have a portable TV at home. I have eyeTV running on my Mac Mini (which is connected to the living room TV). eyeTV can stream live and recorded television via WLAN to the iPad. So now I have a TV (and video recorder) in every room i want! Very useful!

The iPad has even proved to be useful for work although I still think that the virtual keyboard is crap and not much better than on the iPhone.

  • If you know that you will be on the road for the whole day running from one meeting to the other, keep your notebook at home. You wont be able to do any serious work anyway and for the rest the iPad is more than enough.
  • The iPad is great for meetings: you have all your documents with you, you can show presentations & videos and you can even take some meeting notes right away. The iPad also feels much more “intimate” in a meeting than a notebook .. just like a piece of paper.
  • My guess is that the iPad would be ideal for students: 10hours+ battery life, surf & read during lessons, make short notes, read books … I would have killed for something like this during my studies. And if it gets too boring you can just play a game :)

So yes the iPad is an awesome new product and I am still looking forward to buying the 3G version when it finally comes out . I also want Multitasking because the iPad really needs this (much more than the iPhone)… however as you know I am also a bit afraid of the new shiny iPhone OS4 and its new Terms of Service
